Distinguished Teacher of Literacy Award (DTL)
Being recognized as the Distinguished Teacher of Literacy (DTL) in your school showcases your commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong reading and writing. The Distinguished Teacher of Literacy (DTL) for Greenville County represents the entire district as a leader in literacy education and learning.
OBJECTIVES: Teachers, staff and administrators who have joined the Reading Council will nominate one person to be Distinguished Teacher of Literacy. Any member can be selected whether he/she is a math, social studies, science, language arts, physical education, special education, foreign language teacher, or media specialist. This teacher should strive to motivate students to read, develop reading skills and inspire a love and appreciation of reading. WINNERS are announced at the banquet. They will receive a free GCIRA membership for the following year and free registration to the SCIRA conference where they will showcase their work. Addition awards and recognition will be given at the banquet. |

Molly Gorie from Legacy Charter Elementary
Molly is a Cleveland, Ohio native and a graduate of John Carroll University. While at John Carroll, she studied Early Childhood Education with a focus in Literacy. She spent her first two years co-teaching first grade in Cleveland, Ohio. Within this co-teaching environment, she was blessed to be given the gift of planning for and teaching all literacy based lessons. It was during this experience that her love for teaching literacy began to blossom. In 2014 she moved to Greenville, South Carolina and was gifted a position teaching second grade at Legacy Charter School. In the last two and a half years working at Legacy,she has learned an immeasurable amount of skills and strategies to help grow young readers and writers of all different levels.

Jessica Clark is a litearcy leader at Bells Crossing. She uses best practices and current approaches such as Guided Reading and Daily 5 to reach all of her learners. She trains staff at her school in best practices based on information she receives as the building representative who attends district workshops and training sessions. 9th grade English teacher, Julie Jarriel is dedicated to creating passionate and engaged readers through choice, independent reading, and active engagement with text with a variety of strategies such as annotating text. She tailors instruction to meet the academic needs of struggling learners while fostering confident and independent readers. "Julie is truly passionate about education and literacy, and she makes every effort to know and engage her students. Katie Saunders from Bethel Elementary
Katie will represent Greenville County during the state SCIRA conference in February in Hilton Head. Katie is a 2nd grade teacher who believes that modeling strong reading and writing strategies and sharing her own love for reading/writing with her students will encourage students to want to be better readers and writers as well. Katie teaches her students that it is okay to make mistakes, and she fosters an environment where students feel free to unleash their thoughts without worry. Literature is valued in Katie's classroom, and the daily read aloud is a time in which Katie fills her students' brains with wonderful stories. In her classroom, Katie ensures that she knows her students well and challenges them everyday. Katie takes every opportunity to connect with her student's parents, and takes great pride in her continuous learning.
